About 25 miles north of Arak on the old road to Hamedan lay Sarouk. It is renowned the world over for its fine and beautiful carpets. At the end of 19th century Sarouk was already known in Persia for the excellence of its weaving. During the second half of the 19th century large numbers of rugs and carpets were made in and around the village of Sarouk.
Sarouk weavings vary greatly in colours, design and structure. Since production was initially carried out on a cottage industry, as apposed to a workshop basis, designs were often crude and the weavers of Sarouk had greater freedom and individuality to interpret designs.
