The Gabbeh rugs are woven by the Qashqai (kashkai) tribe in Southern Persia. They are the Turkic Tribe and the most important, most advanced and the most prosperous of the tribes of FARS. They are almost completely nomadic, and during eight months of the year they inhabit, in their black goat's hair tents, a high belt of country which extends for about 150 miles northwards. In the autumn they move from highlands to the warmer coastal country which lies west, southwest and south of Shiraz.
In the olden days the Gabbeh rugs were only produced for their own domestic use. During the 1980's the western dealers discovered these simple rugs, with their abstract designs, which were very good for accompanying the new and modern furnishing and decor. During the last part of the 20th century, these rugs were the best sellers, worldwide.
Although Gabeh rugs have been in production for centuries, they were almost unknown to the outside world. They have a thick pile, with very simple designs. These types of rugs are a perfect companion with modern furnishing, and one can put them almost anywhere in the home, from a child's room to a sitting room.
This one is woven with very good quality wool and is very hard wearing as well as being decorative and beautiful. The design is very interesting and is a very primitive way of showing the tribal motifs; the tribe’s people get their inspiration from everyday life hence the occasional goat, tent or mountains you see in their rugs.
The Qashqai (Kashgay) are the largest and most known of Iran's nomadic tribes. They are thought to have migrated from the Caucasus in the eighteenth century to their present territories around Shiraz in the Fars province, southern Iran. They speak a dialect of Turkish. Their warlike character has led them into conflict with successive governments as well as with the other tribes of the area. The Qashqai tribe, a nomadic group of people residing primarily in the Fars province of Iran, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, which includes the art of rug weaving. The Qashqai rugs, also known as Qashqai carpets, hold a special place in the world of traditional Persian carpet weaving. One notable characteristic of Qashqai rugs is the use of high-quality, locally sourced materials. The wool comes from the tribe's own sheep, contributing to the durability and resilience of the rugs. The use of natural dyes, derived from plants and minerals found in the region, adds to the authenticity of these handwoven creations. The traditional techniques employed in the weaving process, such as the use of a horizontal loom, contribute to the distinct texture and quality of Qashqai rugs.
In addition to their cultural and artistic value, Qashqai rugs have gained recognition in the global market for their exceptional craftsmanship.
